Play These 14 Video Games for Animal Rights Quests and Themes

From books to movies, the media we consume helps shape us into effective animal advocates—including video games. 🎮 So many creative games have strong animal rights themes; in some, helping animals is the #1 objective. Start playing these 14 animal-friendly video games today:

Stardew Valley (Available on PC, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android devices)

Players in Stardew Valley can’t harm animals—instead, they’re supposed to care for them and keep them happy. You can even progress through the game as a loyal vegan by focusing on crops or goods instead of milk, eggs, or wool. 😎

Bunny Raiders (Available on PS 4 and 5)

Hop onto the PlayStation Store and add Bunny Raiders to your library. The game lets you battle opps alongside a brave band of bunnies to free mice and monkeys from cruel experimenters.

Kitten Squad (Available on PS4, Switch, and Steam)

Once you’re done fighting alongside rabbits, switch to join a squad of kittens on their quest to liberate animals from exploitation. Your action-packed missions include freeing orcas from a SeaWorld-esque abusement park and saving sheep from the evil Sheep Puncher.

Baldur’s Gate 3 (Available on PC, PS5, Xbox, Mac, and GeForce NOW)

Using a spell to communicate with animals, you can have convos revealing the animals’ emotions and personalities. Plus, you’ll frequently have the option to spare animals or stand up for them when they’re exploited, like saving a bear from captivity in the Goblin Camp.

Fable II (Available on Xbox 360)

Fable II got PETA’s Proggy Award for the Most Animal-Friendly Game in 2008, and it’s not hard to see why. Characters powered by tofu rack up purity points, while those who eat animal flesh become corrupted.

Whole Lotta Lies (Available on Computer)

Your only objective here is to survive as long as possible bc you play as a pig on a “humane” farm. As you try to dodge workers who want to shoot sick and injured pigs and send others to the slaughterhouse, you’ll realize that there’s no such thing as “humane” meat. 

Sonic the Hedgehog (Available on Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Microsoft Windows)

This iconic franchise’s entire premise is a hedgehog thwarting a mad scientist who turns animals into his evil sidekicks. Turn on your fave Sonic Origins, Sonic Frontiers, or Sonic Superstars game and take Doctor Eggman down.

Monkey Fright (Available on Computer)

Archit Kumar, a Cali teen, developed one of the most hair-raising video games out there to show what monkeys exploited for experiments are forced to go through. They’re denied companionship, fresh air, and everything else they care about as they suffer in small cages in laboratories. 😨

The Sims 3 (Available on PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, and Wii)

In The Sims 3, characters who eat vegan foods enjoy longer lives and age more slowly, while characters who eat animal flesh get sick. 😶 Just when you thought Sims couldn’t get any more realistic.

Meat is Murder: The Game (Available on Computer and Mobile)

Cows, chickens, pigs, and turkeys are constantly threatened with slaughter in this game, just like on real farms around the world. Use your lightning-quick reflexes to save as many animals as you can!

Nintendogs (Available on Nintendo DS)

Nintendogs reflects animal guardians’ responsibilities by letting you feed, walk, play with, and care for virtual dogs. Adopting a dog IRL is a huge commitment—even huger for a puppy—so make sure you’re 100% set up before making this life-changing decision.

Cage Fight (Available on Computer)
