Mission: ‘Adopt! Don’t Shop’—Help Cats and Dogs Avoid Homelessness
More than 6 million cats and dogs enter U.S. animal shelters every single year. 🐱🐶🥺 Many more are living on the streets and never even make it into an animal shelter—there just aren’t enough homes for them all. 😢 But you have the power to help as many animals as possible thrive in loving homes—here’s what to do:
First, if you wanna welcome an animal into your home, adopt one—don’t buy one. 🙅 When you buy an animal from a breeder or a pet store, a homeless animal misses out on the chance to be part of a family. Then another animal will be bred to replace the one you bought. 😰 It’s a never-ending cycle of misery.
Second, get your animals spayed or neutered. ‼️ This surgery has no effect on their abilities (other than their ability to reproduce) and prevents the births of animals who could end up homeless. Be sure to hype your local open-admission shelter—these shelters take in any animals, no matter how sick, old, or injured they may be. 😇
