Mission: Urge the Mushroom Council to Quit Funding Animal Experiments

TFW even fungus might be connected to cruelty to animals. 😒 Mushrooms are everything—but because of the Mushroom Council’s flawed decision-making, animals may have suffered and died in laboratories for the mushrooms at your grocery store.

What’s the Mushroom Council Doing?

The Mushroom Council funds cruel and deadly experiments on animals in attempts to make human health claims for marketing mushrooms. Experimenters have suffocated mice to death and killed and dissected countless animals—all to promote the health benefits of mushrooms to consumers.

It should be clear to a group that’s 100% zoned in on mushrooms that humans have eaten them safely for a looong time. They’re a super-common food that’s chock-full of vitamins and minerals. But the Mushroom Council keeps OK’ing experiments using animals instead of going for safe, effective, human-focused studies. And you know who has to pay to fund this cruelty? Farmers! 🤦

How are we supposed to shop for mushrooms when animals might have been abused and killed for them? This is all ridiculous on so many levels:

  • Animals don’t deserve to die for mushrooms.
  • Funding these animal tests makes no sense—humans and other animals have very different physiologies.
  • Struggling farmers shouldn’t be stuck footing the bill for pointless experiments.

What Can You Do?

This is a perfect opportunity for animal advocates to flex our strength. 💪 When enough of us urge the Mushroom Council to stop approving experiments on animals, it will see how powerful the animal rights movement is and make a smart PR move by taking our advice.

By contacting the Mushroom Council, you can help save countless animals, push for research that actually leads to human-relevant results, and take the tax burden off struggling farmers’ shoulders. Plus, you can earn 25 peta2 points in our Rewards Program and already be a third of the way toward unlocking free merch, like an animal rights drink koozie or magnet. 😎

Ready to get started? Here’s what to do:

1. Go to the Mushroom Council’s Instagram page and click on any post.

2. Leave a polite comment asking that the Mushroom Council stop conducting, funding, and commissioning cruel tests on animals. You can use these talking points:

  • The Mushroom Council has funded cruel animal tests to establish human health claims for marketing mushrooms, but this is misleading since there are huge physiological differences between humans and other animals.
  • Mushrooms are a common food with a long history of safe human consumption. Researchers should be pursuing safe and effective human studies, which would lead to human-relevant results.
  • The Hass Avocado Board and dozens of other major food and beverage manufacturers have already banned animal testing to establish health claims for marketing products.
  • Please adopt a public policy that bans the conducting, funding, and commissioning of all tests on animals.
