Egg Shortage? Tofu Never Caused a Pandemic
An egg shortage led to record high prices in early 2025 due to an outbreak of bird flu, and it won’t be the last time this has happened. Egg production always carries the risk of diseases like bird flu, so it’s time to rid your fridge of eggs—and tofu is the perf food to take its place! Here are seven reasons why you should swap out eggs for tofu:
1. Eggs Kill, Tofu Doesn’t
Since male chicks can’t lay eggs, the egg industry sees them as useless and tosses them into trash bags to suffocate or grinds them up alive. 😱 Female chicks are sent to live in misery on farms for two years. Those who survive the conditions are sent to the slaughterhouse, shackled upside down, electrocuted, and scalded to death. Eating eggs props up this cruelty, while eating tofu causes exactly zero animals to die.
2. Chickens Suffer for Eggs
On egg farms worldwide, five to 11 hens are forced to live crammed together in each tiny cage, and each hen has an average living space smaller than a piece of notebook paper. Because of the nasty conditions, chickens often die in their cages and are left to rot alongside living birds. 😢 Chickens are smart, social animals who don’t deserve to suffer for corporate greed—keep your $$$ away from the egg industry by switching to tofu.

3. You Don’t Have to Worry About “Tofu Flu”
Farms that exploit animals are breeding grounds for diseases. It’s no surprise that cramming chickens into poop-filled cages and slaughtering them in slaughterhouses awash with blood, feces, and other bodily fluids leads to outbreaks like bird flu. You know what never caused a pandemic? Tofu.

4. You’ll Save Money
It’s super expensive out here, so the sky-high egg prices are a sign to switch to more economically stable foods. Since tofu is made from soybeans, it avoids the nasty risks involved in egg production that could lead to an outbreak-cased shortage. Even when there isn’t an egg shortage, you generally get more bang for your buck with tofu vs eggs.
5. Plant Protein Reigns Supreme
Speaking of bang for your buck, a serving of tofu packs a bigger protein punch than a serving of eggs. Get this: One large egg has about six grams of protein, while one serving of tofu has about 10 grams. 😤 It’s crucial to get enough protein, and you’ll find that vegan protein sources like seitan, tempeh, and beans tower above animal-derived foods like hot dogs and chicken nuggets.
6. You’ll Cut Out Cholesterol
As if you didn’t have enough reasons to ditch eggs, one large egg has a whopping 200 milligrams of cholesterol. Doctors have recommended not eating more than 300 milligrams of cholesterol daily to avoid heart disease risk. That means eating two eggs per day is risky af. 😶 Meanwhile, tofu, like all vegan foods, is completely cholesterol-free.
7. Tofu is Built for This
Tofu is a top-tier egg replacement in recipes like quiches and custards—to replace one egg, purée 1/4 cup of soft tofu. Firm tofu also works great in eggless salad sandwiches or scrambles. If you’re not a huge tofu stan, you can replace eggs with applesauce, bananas, or any of the vegan “egg” products on our breakfast blog.

Don’t be fooled—even “cage-free” eggs are the product of extreme chicken exploitation. Help spread the word that cage-free doesn’t mean cruelty-free!
