How to Shop for Animal-Friendly Fashion

There’s nothing worse than getting a haul of clothes just to discover that one of the coats you bought was made with wool, rabbit hair, or even fur! That’s right—many stores are still selling sweaters, bags, and other items made with animal derived-materials. 🤮

Luckily, there are more cruelty-free options out there than ever before. Shopping for vegan clothing, shoes, and accessories is easy. Check out this guide to help you find animal-friendly clothes and avoid buying hair and skin. 

Always Read The Label

Before you buy anything, check the label. If you’re shopping online, you can look in the item description to see if there’s a list of the materials used. 

For Sweaters and Other Tops 

Cop: acrylic, bamboo, cotton, cotton flannel, hemp, linen, modal, polyester, polyester fleece, rayon, and viscose 

Drop: alpaca, angora wool, cashmere, mohair, pashmina, silk, and wool

For Coats and Jackets 

Cop: denim, down alternative, faux fur, hemp, Polartec, polyester fleece, PrimaLoft, synthetic down, Thermolite, Thinsulate, waxed canvas, and Wind Pro 

Drop: down, fleece, fur, fur trim, shearling, and wool 

For Shoes 

Cop: all synthetic materials, cork, “fake snake,” faux leather, faux suede, human-made materials, microfiber, microsuede, “mock croc,” mushroom leather, paper leather, pineapple leather, polyurethane, Ultrasuede, and waxed canvas 

Drop: alligator skin, kangaroo skin, leather, snakeskin, and suede 🤢

For Bags and Wallets 

Cop: all synthetic materials, biofabricated leather, cork, “fake snake,” faux leather, faux suede, human-made materials, microfiber, microsuede, “mock croc,” mushroom leather, paper leather, pineapple leather, polyurethane, Ultrasuede, and waxed canvas 

Drop: alligator skin, kangaroo skin, leather, snakeskin, and suede
